NYSE - New York Stock Exchange

The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) was first formed back in 1792 when a group of 24 New York City stockbrokers signed the Buttenwood Agreement (because it was signed under a buttonwood tree) outside number 68 Wall Street.

Despite these humble beginnings, the NYSE has grown to be the largest stock exchange in the world. An average day sees 1.46 billion shares at a value of $46.1 billion traded on the NYSE. It is home to about 2,800 listed companies carrying an estimated market capitalization of $20 trillion.

Although trading on the NYSE is carried out face to face, the NYSE claims to be world’s largest and most technologically advanced equities market
. All orders are delivered electronically with about 10% being carried out automatically.

The NYSE is also home to the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) - a stock market index of 30 of the largest and most widely held public companies in the USA.

Market hours on the NYSE are currently 9.30am to 4.00pm (EST), Monday to Friday.
