Reminiscences of a Stock Operator is probably one of the best and well known books on the subject of financial speculation.

The book is a thinly disguised biography of the great stock trader Jesse Livermore, but also documents the time of financial speculation during the early 20th century.

Reminiscences of a Stock Operator tells how Livermore started his amazing career when he was a teenager working in one of the bucket shops that were common during this time. He had a head for numbers and noticed how stocks reacted during times of heavy buying or selling.

He became smart to the fact that he was able to trade successfuly on what he had learnt and went on to create and destroy several huge fortunes.

Even though Reminiscences of a Stock Operator is an old book and tells a story of a time that is largely removed from todays computer controlled markets, there is a lot of wisdom that you can take from this book to help you with your trading.

Also, take note that this is the one book that is pretty much required reading for most of the traders that are interviewed in Jack Schwagers Market Wizards – Interviews With Top Traders.

Each chapter covers different aspects of how Livermore ran his trading affairs, and it is interesting to take specific note of how Livermore managed to lose such massive fortunes with uncharacteristic moves – and not do the same yourself!

When Jack Schwager researched and wrote Market Wizards – Interviews With Top Traders, you can only wonder whether he was aware that he was producing one of the most important books on the topic of trading.

The book is a series of interviews with a variety of traders who Jack Schwager considered to have a remarkable prowess for creating lots of money in the financial markets.

Trader Mike’s September Watchlist

Not only is Daryl Guppy considered to be one of Australia’s most well know and respected traders – trading since the late 1980′s – but he is also a best-selling author – having been involved with the writing of about 7 of his own books and contributing to books by well regarded authors such as Martin J. Pring, William F. Eng and Gerald Krefetz.

Martin “Buzzy” Schwartz

Martin Schwartz (aka Buzzy, aka Marty Schwartz) is a once legendary trader on Wall Street. His trading prowess has been documented in two very good books that I have read : Market Wizards : Interviews with Top Traders by Jach Schwager and Pit Bull : Lessons from Wall Street’s Champion Day Trader an autobiography by Martin Schwartz himself (of course).

Schwartz honed his trading skills after periods of losses by formulating a strict trading plan with lots of research in the markets. By setting himself goals he has been able to achieve outstanding success as a trader.

Schwartz has certainly achieved a lot in his trading career. His trading results speak for themselves, but he also took part and won many trading contests.

However, with this success, there also came a lot of stress – resulting in sickness and emergency heart surgery rescuing him from certain death. And finaly a change in lifestyle and scenery by moving from New York to Florida.

How I Made $2,000,000 in the Stock Market is an extremely easy read. Don’t be put of by the somewhat cheesy title either. Even if you do not trade the book would be entertaining, and if you do, it would possibly be the cheapest $10 of advice you could receive about this business.

Jack Schwager

Jack Schwager is certainly well known in trading circles. He is the managing director and principal of The Fortune Group – an asset management firm that is regulated in the UK and USA – where he is also the principal investment manager of the Market Wizard Funds.

However, what Jack Schwager is probably most well known for is his work as an author on a series of books about trading and financial markets. This is an area where he has brought together his 30+ years of experience in the field of financial investing.

The books cover topics such as technical analysis, fundamental analysis, and futures trading. The book which would be considered by many as one of the most important on the subject of trading as a whole is Market Wizards : Interviews with Top Traders. This book contains a series of interviews with many successful traders who operated in the 1980′s as well as some material by Jack Schwager which covers a grounding in some of the terminology and operations of some of the worlds different financial institutions. The fact that the book is considered required reading by some trading organisations for its employees is a measure of its importance.

Nicolas Darvas

Nicolas Darvas was a world famous American dancer back in the mid 1900′s. After making a profit in some stock of a Canadian mining firm (which he bought from the proprietors of a Canadian dance venue), Darvas was hooked on chasing a quick buck in the Stock Market.

Like many before him, Darvas was convinced that having made an initial profit, he was some kind of natural born stock market speculator. However (again like many before him) Darvas took loss after loss on the Canadian stock market after buying in and out of the market on the advice of brokers and newsletters.

Telling himself that the Canadian Stock Market was for small fry, He changed course for the New York Stock Exchange. Here (again) he took loss after loss, buying in and out of the market on the advice of brokers and newsletters. Always seemingly buying at the high – then witnessing a sharp retracement – and selling at the low.

Sick of buying on the high and selling on the low, and in a fit of desperation, Darvas ploughed his money into a couple of stocks that that had been hitting their 52-week high. He was utterly surprised that the stocks continued to rise and subsequently sold them to make a rare profit.

Darvas decide to regroup to assess this remarkable occurrence. And it was here that Darvas came up with his plan for trading stocks that was to see him achieve a multi million dollar fortune in just a couple of years – his theory that has become known as Darvas Boxes.

From now on Darvas would execute his famous trading plan. Selecting stocks with new 52-week highs and suitable spikes in volume coupled with favourable fundamental company research.

This method also showed Darvas remarkable insights into a stocks price behaviour, often revealing the signs of ‘inside buying’ before a companies release of favourable news to the public.

After accumulating his fortune, and also being exposed in Time magazine, Darvas was to document his actions in the book How I Made 2,000,000 in the Stock Market, which of course, is well worth a read if you too are interested in learning more about his techniques.

Trader Mike hosts his Trading Journal at www.tradermike.net. His website is actually a Blog which he uses to journal his trading opinions and is also full of useful information about trading.
