If you are looking for a style of trading that is shorter term than trend following, but don’t want to devote yourself to day trading, then you may want to take a look at Swing Trading.

For the investor who practices Swing Trading, stocks (or other financial instruments) are generally held for a period of a few days to a couple of weeks.

Although Swing Trading has been around for as long as people have been trading in financial markets, it generally became popular with the decline of day trading after the dot com bubble burst. Swing Trading offered a way to free the trader from the computer screen, but still make relatively quick profits in the market.

A successful Swing Trader is able to pick out when a stock is likely to change direction and profit from the change. The stock may continue to move in the new direction for a few days or even a couple of weeks. Positions may be taken with on the long or short side of the trade.

Although all stocks display a tendency to swing from high to low positions (and visa versa), some of the better stocks that are often picked for Swing Trading, are the larger cap stocks that trade with higher volume on established markets.

These stocks tend to trade within an established and relatively defined range or channel. The smart Swing Trader is able to profit from these constant moves in price.

Swing trading is often attributed as being a good way for a beginner trader to get their feet wet in the markets as it lacks the stress of day trading, but provides quicker results than longer term trend following. Of course, the beginner trader should always research the markets they are trading and formulate a solid trading plan before embarking on any trading whatsoever.

With good money management and a solid trading plan, Swing Trading has enable many people to make a good profit from their trading endevours.
