The FTSE100 is the leading Share Index on the London Stock Exchange, and is comprised of its largest 100 stocks.

It serves as a leading indicator for the state of the UK Financial Market and is also considered to be one of the leading share indexes in Europe.

It is generally referred to as the footsie - and has been around since 1982 and came about from the a joint venture between the Financial Times and the London Stock Exchange with their formation of the FTSE All Share-Index in 1962. The FSTE100 was then formed in 1982.

Some of the companies that are included in the FTSE100 are British Petroleum (BP), GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), Rolls-Royce Group (RR), and Vodafone (VOD).

The 100 companies of the FTSE100 account for 80% of their market and the requirements for being included in the index is a market capitalization of about 2 billions pounds sterling.
