Trader Mike’s September Watchlist

Trader Mike has posted his watchlist for September 26 today.

He takes a look at the chart for the Nasdaq Composite (^IXIC), some potential swing trades, some potential day trades, and follows it all up with some intraday updates.

It’s worth keeping an eye on what Trader Mike. Sometimes he post several times a day to his blog and often posts a watchlist on a daily basis.

Be sure to also read his disclaimer on how he uses his watchlists while you are there.

DarvasTrade.com

If you are a fan of Nicolas Darvas, the dancer who made $2,000,000 by trading stocks back in the 1960’s, then you should check out www.darvastrade.com.

A recent page there has taken a look at the NASDAQ Stock Exchange to see what stocks are behaving so that Nicolas Darvas might have shown some interest in them. There are quite a few so they have been split by alphabetical order into the A to L and M to Y stocks.

LSE - London Stock Exchange

The London Stock Exchange (LSE) was founded in 1801 and has grown to be one of the largest in the world with over 2,800 companies listed upon it.

The exchange itself actually comprises of the Main Market - listing the larger and more prestigious companies with a market capitalisation of more than £3,500bn - and the Alternative Investments Market (AIM) - which functions to represent the small cap growth market.

The LSE’s former building was located on Threadneadle Street in the heart of the City of London or the Square Mile (Londons financial district) and was opened in 1972. It consisted of a formal trading floor where stocks were exchanged face to face. This became largely redundant however in October 1987 when the Big Bang shook up the UK’s financial industry by deregulating many of the LSE’s activities.

The LSE was to move again in 2004 to Paternoster Square which is still in the Cities Square Mile.

S&P500 - Standard and Poors 500 Index

The Standard and Poors 500 Index (S&P 500) is basically an index of 500 stocks which are chosen to provide a wide range of industries, their liquidity, and market size which are traded on the New York Stock Exchange and the NASDAQ Exchange. The index is considered to provide a universal indication as to the market behaviour of the large caps. However, these 500 companies are by no means the biggest listed companies.

The companies are selected by a team of analysts at Standard and Poors called the S&P Index Committee. Standard and Poors is a company specializing in the financial research and analysis of stocks and debt instruments.

The S&P 500 dates back to 1923. When it was first formed it only contained 233 companies, but grew to contain 500 by 1957.

Joseph Marshall Wade

Here is a good quote from Joseph Marshall Wade:

If I wanted to become a tramp, I would seek information and advice from the most successful tramp I could find. If I wanted to become a failure, I would seek advice from people who have never succeeded. If I wanted to succeed in all things, I would look around me for those who are succeeding, and do as they have done.

I’m afraid we have not been able to find out anything meaningful on who Joseph Marshall Wade is/was, but the quote can be found at the beginning of Market Wizards : Interviews with Top Traders by Jack Schwager.

If we manage to find out anything about him, we shall update this page.

NASDAQ 100

The NASDAQ 100 is the main index for the NASDAQ Stock Exchange. It is made up of the top 100 stocks on the exchange and does not include any financial companies or investment companies.

It is calculated as a weighted average in that some indexes affect its value more than others. Essentially bigger companies are more heavily weighted but some modification to the weighting is made to keep the large companies from completely overwhelming the smaller ones.

When investigating the NASDAQ 100 it is interesting to remember that it is made up of relatively new stocks. The oldest would only be about 25 years old but have proved themselves to dominate the market. This can be useful if you want to hold a portion of your investments in high tech companies.

However, it is important to remember that because of it’s heavy weighting in this financial area - the NASDAQ 100 can be very volatile.

Some companies that are included in the NASDAQ 100 are Apple Computer Inc (AAPL), Dell Inc (DELL), eBay Inc (EBAY) and Microsoft Corporation (MSFT).

Martin “Buzzy” Schwartz

Martin Schwartz (aka Buzzy, aka Marty Schwartz) is a once legendary trader on Wall Street. His trading prowess has been documented in two very good books that I have read : Market Wizards : Interviews with Top Traders by Jach Schwager and Pit Bull : Lessons from Wall Street’s Champion Day Trader an autobiography by Martin Schwartz himself (of course).

Schwartz honed his trading skills after periods of losses by formulating a strict trading plan with lots of research in the markets. By setting himself goals he has been able to achieve outstanding success as a trader.

Schwartz has certainly achieved a lot in his trading career. His trading results speak for themselves, but he also took part and won many trading contests.

However, with this success, there also came a lot of stress - resulting in sickness and emergency heart surgery rescuing him from certain death. And finaly a change in lifestyle and scenery by moving from New York to Florida.

Where to buy Martin “Buzzy” Schwartz books

If you are keen to buy Martin “Buzzy” Schwartz books, I would recommend the following websites for getting a better deal than buying at a shop:

  • Ebay - You can often find a good deal on used items here, and I often pick up useful books for low prices.
  • Amazon - Amazon.com allways has these books in stock and can deliver it quickly.
